Bernard "Bernie" Dougherty, age 88, of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 30, 2017. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years Janet Dougherty, their children; Christina (Rodney) Meisell, Diana (James) Downey, Laura (Neil) Spader, Kathy (Albert) Morgan, Kristi (Jeff) Riggleman, David (Tarin) Dougherty, and Dan Dougherty, their grandchildren; Alan, Graham, Rob, Caitlin (Anthony), Marek, Alaina, Brianne, Edward, Bethany, Casandra, Jamie, Austin, Reilly, and Rorie. Preceded in death by his mother Marian Dougherty. Bernie was a veteran of the Army and he was a long time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Matteson. Bernie was employed as an engineer for Illinois Bell and retired after 35 years. He also ran the telecommunications system at University of Illinois at Chicago. In his later years, Bernie enjoyed wood working and made a number of items for his family. Funeral Service for Bernard will be 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 6201 Vollmer Road, Matteson, IL 60433, with Pastor Matthew Troester officiating. Inurnment with full military honors will take place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood at 2:00 P.M. on the same day. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
