Obituary

Bruce W. Bissell, age 76, of New Lenox, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, January 13, 2024, after a courageous 14 year battle with Multiple Myeloma. He is survived by his devoted wife of 24 years, Mary (nee Franiak) Bissell, his children Jenna Finley, David (Megan) Bissell, Julie Kuiken, and Jaclyn (Samuel) Higdon, his grandchildren Mackenzie (Zack) Guignardi, Liam Finley, Luke Finley, Jasper Bissell, Ronan Bissell and Ava Horn, his sisters-in-law Theresa Holzhauer and Jaclyn Franiak, his brother-in-law Thomas (Donni) Franiak, several; nieces, nephews, cousins and his faithful canine companion "Baxter". Preceded in death by his parents Milton and Lila (nee Oanes) Bissell, his sister Sharon in infancy, his daughter Angela in infancy, and his parents-in-law Edward and Kathleen (nee Block) Franiak. Bruce was a graduate of Larkin High School in Elgin. He received his associate degree from the Northwest Missouri State University and went on to Western Illinois University where he then was drafted into the U.S. Army during Vietnam. Bruce was a proud veteran who continued to support Vietnam Veterans throughout his life. Bruce later became a successful insurance agent and worked for Country Companies, retiring after 44 years. Bruce played football in high school, and was a prolific fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs. Bruce was an active member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ and sang in the church choir for many years. He had deep relationships with church members and friends throughout the community. He could always be relied on in regards to his wit and humor. He enjoyed a round of golf and gardening, but what brought Bruce most joy was spending time with his family. Bruce will be remembered for his kind and humble nature; and for being a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 17, 2024 from 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ. Funeral service will be at 12:00 P.M. Interment with committal service and full military honors will take place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, Il. at 2:00 P.M.
