Obituary

Catherine "Kate" Gabriel Strawn (nee Goley), age 90, of Elwood passed away peacefully on Monday, February 1, 2021 at her home. A beloved wife of 68 years and mother, she is survived by her husband Walter and devoted daughter Alesia. Born March 24, 1930, in Ilkeston, England to parents Mary and Tom Goley who were originally of Ireland. Catherine and Walter met when he was stationed at Burtonwood Air Force Base near Irlam where she lived. They were married at St. Mary's church in downtown Joliet on January 24, 1953. Upon the completion of Walter's service in North Dakota, the couple returned to Elwood where she was involved in the community and participated in the Air Force Civil Defense Ground Observer Corps. After their daughter arrived in 1968, Catherine became involved in the Elwood School Parent Teacher Organization and went on to be an Illini Mom. Catherin was also a devoted pet parent throughout her life, she enjoyed planting flowers in the spring, an internet enthusiast with WebTV in the 90's and beyond and she was an Elwood Village Board spouse for over 10 years. Catherine is survived by her brothers Danny and Hugh both of England, several in-laws, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Mary and Nellie of Irlam and Bridget of Elgin, a nephew and several in-laws. Visitation for Catherine will be on Monday, February 8, 2021 from 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. at Forsythe Gould Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 12:00 Noon followed by a procession to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, for a committal service at 1:00 P.M. Masks and social distancing will be required. Memorials in Catherine's name to the Elwood Children's Garden to 801 N. Chicago Ave., Elwood, IL 60421 or a donation of your time of volunteering to maintain the Children's Garden by calling 815-693-0214 would be most appreciated.
