It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Fitzgerald, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished friend. David departed this world peacefully on July 21, 2026, at the age of 79, under the gentle care of Lightways Hospice.

David was born on April 17, 1947, in the close-knit community of Manhattan, Illinois, to Robert and Martha Fitzgerald. He was the youngest of their children and grew up surrounded by the love of his siblings, Marilyn (late Robert) Doyle, Susan (late George) Roblee, Joseph (late Marlis) Fitzgerald, John "Jack" (Judy), and James Fitzgerald. Though predeceased by his parents and siblings, David carried their memory in his heart throughout his life.

On May 22, 1965, David married the love of his life, Patricia Keating, and together they built a beautiful family and shared a remarkable 61-year journey of love, laughter, and unwavering support. David's legacy is lovingly continued by his devoted wife Patricia Fitzgerald, sons Joseph (Jennifer) and Michael (Suzy Cherry), daughter Bridgett (Jill) Fitzgerald, grandchildren Shannon (Carl) Luna and Cassady (Luke) Salabura, Brittany Goers, and AJ and Danielle Cherry, and great-grandchildren LJ, Paisley, and Iyla Salabura. He is also survived by his sister Jean (Bill) Weber, who held a special place in his heart.

David dedicated his professional life to his work as an Operating Engineer with Local 150, where his hard work and commitment were admired by all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Beyond his career, David was a proud volunteer firefighter with the Manhattan Fire Protection District for over 30 years. His service to the community was a testament to his selfless spirit and deep sense of duty.

Those who knew him will fondly remember his dry sense of humor and quick wit. He had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel welcomed and valued in his presence. His warmth and humor brought joy to countless lives and left an indelible mark on all who had the honor of knowing him. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace, knowing the profound impact he made in his lifetime.

In accordance with David's wishes, a private ceremony will be held to honor and celebrate his remarkable life. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, Manhattan, IL.
