Gregory Bruce Gustafson, 90, of Joliet, Illinois, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2026, at Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Joliet, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on June 17, 1936, in Valley City, North Dakota, Greg was the beloved son of the late Glenn and Dorothy (née Brazel) Gustafson. Raised on the family farm in Fingal, North Dakota, he developed the strong work ethic and devoted spirit that defined his entire life. Greg graduated from Dakota Business College and went on to build a distinguished 42-year career with General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC), a tenure interrupted only by two years of proud service in the United States Army.
On November 27, 1971, Greg married Marilyn Riley. Together, they built a warm home and celebrated nearly 55 years of marriage grounded in family and shared joy.
Greg was a passionate Chicago sports fan, avidly following the Cubs, Blackhawks, Bears, and the historic Michael Jordan-era Bulls. Above all, however, his ultimate passion was supporting his family. Nothing brought Greg greater happiness than watching his children and grandchildren play sports and perform. Over the decades, he could almost always be found in the stands or audience—faithfully attending hundreds of baseball, volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, and hockey games, dance recitals, and even the occasional track meet, serving as his family's biggest and proudest cheerleader.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Dorothy Gustafson, and his brother, David Gustafson.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marilyn Gustafson; his brother, Glenn Gustafson Jr.; his sister, Mary (Eddie) Christl; his children, Scott (Martha) Gustafson and Lisa (Todd) Schroeder; his cherished grandchildren, Emily, Abigail, and Dylan Gustafson, and Jacob and Alyssa Schroeder; and his great-grandchild, Brooklyn Schroeder, as well as many dear extended family members and friends.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all of the caregivers and healthcare workers who took such wonderful care of Greg over the last month, with special thanks to the dedicated staff at Sunny Hill Nursing Home.
Memorial Visitation for Greg will take place from 10:00 A.M. until the time of Service at 12:00 P.M. on Friday, November 13, 2026 at Forsythe Gould Funeral Home. Interment will immediately follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Manhattan, IL. Arrangements entrusted to Forsythe Gould Funeral Home, 507 S. State St., Manhattan, IL 60442, 815-478-3321, www.forsythegouldfh.com.
