Janice "Jan" I. Carlos (nee Liestman), age 78, of Manhattan passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 23, 2023, at Silver Cross Hospital with loving family at her side after a brief battle with an aggressive cancer. Survived by her husband of 57 years Eugene "Buzz" Carlos, her children Christie Simon, Michelle (Craig) Falduto and Scott (Nellie) Carlos, grandchildren Haily (Brett) Beno, Gehrig Simon, Jake Simon, Kassidy Falduto, Nicholas Falduto, Ethan Falduto, Sophie Carlos, Cynthia Carlos, and Lucy Carlos, her siblings Anita Rohwedder, Karen Hyde and Dean (Sharilyn) Liestman, her brothers in law and her sisters in law Michael (Kathy) Carlos, Peggy (Ricky) Walsh, Sherri (Mike) Phil (Patsy) Carlos, and Denny (Mari) Carlos and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Preceded in death by her parents Irvin and Lucile (nee Moore) Liestman, a grandson in infancy Christopher Carlos, and brothers in law Don Rohwedder and Dick Hyde. Jan grew up on a farm in Fisher Illinois. She embraced those years and future years to come and treated sweet corn picking as a holiday. She cherished gathering with family and friends for the annual corn picking event. Jan left the farm life when she went to Illinois State University where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in teaching. She then taught Home Economics for Rich South and Rich East High Schools and later substituted in Frankfort and Lincoln-Way School Districts. Jan was an avid reader, she also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and canning, applesauce, peaches and tomatoes were among her favorites. Jan was also known for her homemade noodles, candies, and breads, the grandchildren have fond memories of helping grandma especially during the holidays. After becoming a grandma, Jan's and Buzz's lives revolved around the grandchildren, attending all their events rain or shine, she was their biggest cheerleader. In Jan's later years, she enjoyed wintering in Fort Meyers, FL, with Buzz, hunting for seashells with her grandchildren and enjoying the pool and beaches. Jan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Visitation for Jan will take place on Thursday, July 27, 2023, from 4-8:00 P.M. at the Forsythe Gould Funeral Home. Funeral service will take place the following day, Friday, July 28, 2023, beginning with prayers at 10:30 A.M. at the funeral home followed by procession to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 235 W. North St., Manhattan for 11:000 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial. Committal service and burial will take place at 1:00 P.M. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jan's name to www.farmrescue.org would be most appreciated.
