Lawrence G. Schmidt, age 84, passed away on Thursday, July 28. 2022, with loving family at his side. He is survived by his dear wife of 60 years, Hester (nee Cruise), children, Judith (David) Cullen, Anita (Mark) Barton, Laura (Rich) Schmidt, Clara (Alan) Brown, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, sister-in-laws, Margaret Kanne, Francis Knowles and brother-in-law, Bob Zusag. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Larry is preceded in death by his parents, George and Ann Schmidt. Larry grew up in Joliet and joined the United States Marines and was stationed in Hawaii. During his time in the military, Larry was a sharp shooter instructor. After returning home, he worked at the Barrett Hardware store in Joliet. After a few years, Larry began working at Caterpillar and remained there for 30 years until he retired in 1993. In his spare time, he enjoyed listening to music, and taking trips to Florida and to visit relatives in Arizona and California. Private services will be held for Larry. Interment with full military honors will take place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
