Obituary

Mildred C. (nee Riley) Flanagan, age 72, of Manhattan, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, Joliet. She is survived by her children, Brenda Tanner of Ottawa, Mary Robin (David) Nelson of Crest Hill, Wanda Flanagan of Manhattan, John D. Flanagan Jr. of Manhattan, nine grandchildren; Jennifer, Robert, Christopher, Ricky Jr., and Stephanie Tanner, Emerald, Nicholas, and Christian Nelson, and Jessica Flanagan,16 Great Grandchildren and one on the way. One brother Robert Riley Sr., 4 sisters; Madeline (Pete) Bird, Marilyn (Greg) Gustafson, Myrtle (John) Briggs, Maureen (Todd Sr.) Bennett, two sisters-in-law, Brenda Riley and Ella Childress, one brother-in-law Roger Smith, godmother to Kathy Archer and Nicholas Nelson and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Mary (nee Manning) Riley, her husband John D. Flanagan Sr. (1981), Grandsons; Thomas John Tanner, John Stephen Flanagan, and David Lamar Nelson Jr.. One brother Thomas Riley Jr., two sisters, Marjorie Smith, Mary Lou Wickham, one son-in-law Rick Tanner Sr. Mildred was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic school and attended St. Francis Academy. She was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Manhattan. She enjoyed the beauty of her yard and the many plants she grew. She loved having her family over for all the parties for any occasion. River boating became a favorite pastime for her and her sisters. Her children depended on her listening ear time and time again. They admired her strong work ethic throughout her 32 years at Caterpillar as a Machinist on 3rd shift. She will be missed by her family and all that knew her.The family would like to recognize and thank our Aunt, Rene Bennett, for her special support and heartfelt care she gave to our mother, Mildred, the peace of mind she provided us, can never be measured. Funeral service for Mildred will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 29, 2015 from Forsythe Gould Funeral Home to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 235 W. North St., Manhattan, for 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be Monday, September 28, 2015 from 4-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, Manhattan.
