Paul Megurdichian, age 89, of Crete, passed away on Saturday, February 19, 2022. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joan, sons, Mike (Cindy) and Nick (Cheryl) and grandchildren, Ashley (Micah) and Michelle. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Paul is preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Attia Megurdichian and his sister, Anna (Leland). Paul's parents were survivors of the Armenian genocide of 1915. Paul attended Chicago Vocational School and entered the U.S. Navy upon graduation, completing basic training at Great Lakes Naval Base. Paul had traveled to the Suez Canal and was stationed aboard the USS Champlain during his time in the service. He learned his future trade as a machinist while in the service. After leaving the service, he worked as a Machinist, first at Argonne National Laboratory and then at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. In his younger years, Paul played baseball, bowled regularly and passionately enjoyed being an umpire in Calumet Park and Blue Island for the men's and women's 16 in. softball leagues. He also golfed, an activity he continued well into his 80s. It was said that on a trip to visit his brother-in-law, Jack Tieri, in Littleton, Colorado, Paul caught the "flea market bug" and loved going to various markets throughout the area, especially in St. John, Indiana ever since. Paul was an avid card player and would spend hours with his friends playing poker at the Horseshoe Casino. His love of the game and spending time with his friends far outweighed any winnings. Visitation for Paul will take place on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Forsythe Gould Funeral Home in Manhattan. Funeral Service will immediately follow at 1:00 P.M. also at the funeral home. Interment with full military honors will take place at 2:00 P.M. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. Arrangements entrusted to Forsythe Gould Funeral Home, 507 S. State St., Manhattan, IL 60442, 815-478-3321, www.forsythegouldfh.com.
