Sophie P.
Wojtanowski
March 27, 1927 – July 13, 2024
Sophie P. Wojtanowski (nee Moskalik), age 97, of Posen, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at her daughter's home holding her daughter's hand. She is survived by her daughter Judy (Doug) Wilmoth (nee Wojtanowski) of Manhattan, IL, and son Walter "Wally" (Carol) Voyt of Romeoville, IL, and her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Walter to whom she was married for 59 years, who passed away in 2003, and all of her 10 siblings.
She was a member of Posen's St. Stanislaus Catholic Church from birth until the Diocese closed it in 2022, and educated by the nuns there. Sophie was born in Posen in 1927, began her family in Dixmoor, then returned to Posen where her family grew up. She lived in the house her husband and brothers built for 65 years until she had to leave to live with her daughter in 2020. She worked at several known, but now gone, establishments such as Wasso's Foods in Harvey, Chuck Cavallini's in Midlothian, and A&P in Midlothian and Harvey. She is known in her family for her sparkling kitchen floor which she diligently scrubbed and waxed on her knees every Friday night. She had a large extended family with her and Walter's siblings and their families. The family held a Christmas party at a sister's house with a big spread and a visit from Santa, and they loved parties and picnics in the forest preserves with Polish music, singing, dancing, horseshoes and an occasional beverage. She and Walter had epic barbecued ribs in their backyard, still talked about by the younger generation. Sophie was a kind, amiable, and generous human being.
