Obituary

Beloved Thomas J. Smith "T. Smith", age 53 of Manhattan, IL, passed away at Lightways Hospice in Joliet, IL on May 5, 2026. Survived by his siblings John Smith of Lockport, Colleen Smith of Chicago, and Timothy Smith of Carol Stream, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Preceded in death by his parents Roger W. and Marjorie (nee Riley) Smith, paternal grandparents Howard and Leta (nee Sampson) Smith, and maternal grandparents Thomas and Mary (nee Manning) Riley.

Tom graduated from St. Joseph's School in 1986. As a kid, he loved playing baseball with his many friends in town. He graduated from Joliet Catholic High School in 1990-- the last all male class before its transition to co-ed Joliet Catholic Academy. He also attended Eastern Illinois University. As an adult, he loved playing softball with many of his same childhood friends, playing for teams sponsored by Forsythe Funeral Chapel, Fritz's Saloon and any other team that needed a player. Tommy loved reminiscing and telling stories about the good memories and great friendships he made on the field. It was one of his most favorite things to do. He also volunteered as a coach for youth sports teams for St. Joseph's School, Manhattan #114, and Manhattan Park District. Further, as an avid Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame fan, he would never miss a game. Tommy was very social and happy-go-lucky in character, always introducing himself to new people and keeping up with those he deeply loved and cared about, maintaining those relationships despite the years or distance. His lighthearted "why not" attitude towards life was infectious, a trait amongst many that spread to all and made him so well liked across the community.

Per Tommy's wishes, cremation will take place. Mass for Tommy will be held on June 20, 2026 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Manhattan at 10:30 A.M. Family and friends will be received at the church from 9:00 A.M. until the time Mass begins. Inurnment at St. Joseph Cemetery, Manhattan will take place privately at a later date following services. Arrangements entrusted to Forsythe Gould Funeral Home, 507 S. State St., Manhattan, IL 60442, 815-478-3321, www.forsythegouldfh.com.
