Virginia Knick, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend died peacefully in Longmont, CO at the age of 93. Mom was born and raised in Chicago. Throughout her life, she was a devout Catholic and adored the Virgin Mary. As a girl, she loved to dance and sing. She later recalled that her "dance card was always full", and she even cut a record, singing in Polish. In 1952, she married Florian, whom she had known since third grade. A few years later, they moved to Joliet where they spent many happy years together raising their family. Although at first, there was quite an adjustment period. She had to learn to drive, at age 39, and even then she had a hard time finding good rye bread and fresh kielbasa. She was always proud to call herself a working mom. She began working right after high school and continued until she was 67. She had fond memories of her employment at Churchill Cabinet, Commonwealth Edison, Goldblatt's and finally at Catholic Holy Family Society from which she retired after 24 years. She loved math and working with numbers. She prided herself on perfect penmanship and English. She was a fast typist, occasionally staying up into the wee hours typing term papers for a certain middle child. Family was important to her, and she and Dad would visit their parents in "the city" every weekend, and also vacation with relatives. She especially enjoyed the Kmiecik reunions. Her favorite time of the year was Christmas. She would spend days making bread, cookies, and pierogi. The Knick house smelled wonderful. Her best friend was her sister, Mary. They did everything together. Shopping, cooking, family dinners, and more shopping. These were the two sisters' favorite times. They also liked to shop. Over the years, Mom also enjoyed sewing, drawing, painting, and traveling with Dad. She really enjoyed bowling as her recorded high score on the Com Ed bowling team in 1948 was 231. Mom loved to play cards with her grandchildren. She was a pretty good egg-colorer at Easter, and pumpkin-carver at Halloween, but with any grandchildren present, she became an expert at both of these arts. Coffee and donuts were her secret to living a long life. Preceded in death by her husband, Florian, her parents, Michael and Mary, her sister and best friend, Mary (late Michael), brothers and sisters, Joseph, Albina (late Ed), William (late Henrietta), Lillian (late Kasmer), and Wally (late Nadine). Also preceded in death by nephews Bob and Tom and niece Gerry. Survived and by her three children, Mary (Alex), Michael (Laurie), Margaret (Stuart) and grandchildren, Dylan, Jakob, Amelia, Eleanor and Ruby. Survived by brother Edward (late Jean) and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would particularly like to thank the nurses and staff at Atria Longmont, Always Best Care Senior Services and Canyon Hospice all in Longmont, Colorado for the loving care they gave Virginia in her last weeks. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place for Virginia on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Joliet. A private committal service and interment will take place on Monday, October 25, 2021 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, where she will be laid to rest next to her loving husband.
